B U D G E T I N G ! - The #1 Habit that Will Change Your Financial Life - Permanently for the Better!
.A budget or spending plan shows you exactly where your money is going, and allows you to precisely allocate your resources so that you actually achieve your financial goals instead of leaving things to chance. Without budget planning, you are definitely stacking the deck against your financial success.
The key is to approach budgeting with the right attitude, and not to view it as restrictive and negative. Instead, resolve to view your monthly budget planner as a powerful tool that you’ll keep coming back to until you master the art and science of your personal or family budget. Home budget software can really help, but you absolutely must resolve to develop a realistic financial plan or road map going forward - even if you have to try a few different approaches before you eventually get it right.
In a study at Harvard Business School in 1979, business students were asked, “How many of you have set clear, written goals for your future and made plans to accomplish them?”
As it turned out:
- 13 percent had goals but hadn’t put them in writing,
- 3 percent had specific goals and had put them in writing,
- 84 percent had no goals at all.
Ten years later, the study was revisited to see how each student was performing in the business world.
- The 13 percent who had made goals were earning about double, on average, of what the 84 percent who had made no goals were earning.
- The 3 percent who wrote down their goals were earning ten times (10x) as much as the remaining 97 percent put together.
Do you see how this might apply to budgeting? Setting a budget is really about taking the facts and figures from your financial life and putting them down on paper accurately - or on a computer screen - in order to gain better understanding and control over them (your money). Those who budget will have a better idea of their needs and goals than those who don’t - and stand a dramatically higher chance of achieving their future financial goals.
In these troublesome financial times, budgeting has gained even more importance, because it reveals how often Canadians put aside the need to budget in favor of using credit to achieve the lifestyles that they might not otherwise be able to sustain. This eventually leads to financial stress which can manifest in a host of different ways, adversely affecting other areas of their lives - and therefore those around them aswell.
Personal budgeting Canada - it’s the way to go!
Setting a budget is about financial balance - about spending not more than your income allows - about paying off expenses and debts, and using knowledge to attain the longer-term goal of financial independence. It’s about feeling GOOD about your finances!
In the Harvard Business School study mentioned above, the people who succeeded the most were the people who set a clear cut goal, wrote it down, with measurable benchmarks along the way - the people who locked onto targets of future success and kept their focus over time.
Setting a budget includes striving toward goals - goals of long-term financial security that will keep your household stable both in the short-term and the far distant future.
Having and following a budget means being realistic and seeing your financial situation as it actually is in order to put your finances on more solid ground. It can be a bonanza for some.
Even if you’re currently struggling financially, having a statement that shows you exactly where you are will help you know exactly the kind of direction you need to head in - where to cut expenditures, how to allocate resources and how to leverage what you already have. Tip: the “little things” - $1, $2, $5 etc. can add up much more than you think.
Consider a budget to be your personal financial road map, and even if your long-term goals are merely daydreams at this point, by setting your goals within a realistic budget, you’ll finally have a specific map that can guide you to a better place.
The first step toward gaining control and charting a course for a healthier financial situation, is to gather up all of the paperwork and just face the problem head on - Yea, just decide to tackle it, cold turkey
Decide that you are tackling this now and there’s no going back. Decide that you will keep picking it up if you falter and you will not quit until the job is done. Budgeting is Smart and You Want to Educate Yourself. Once you look at your finances as they truly are, you will be better able to determine the best course of action going forward.
